Ever since Daniel Warren Johnson came on the podcast to discuss Do a Powerbomb!, we've been obsessing over Lastman. You may recall, during our conversation about his comic's radically bold climax, DWJ mentioned how this French fighting comic influenced his decision to do what he did with you know who. After such a tease, we immediately snatched up the first volume published by Skybound Entertainment. We're happy to report that the book is everything Daniel Warren Johnson promised us it would be.
Written by Bastien Vivés and Balak and illustrated by Vivés and Michaél Sanlaville, Lastman has been around since 2013, but Skybound is bringing the entire series to life through four beautifully thick volumes. Books one and two are currently available, while Book Three will hit shelves in July and Book Four in November. They're meaty collections that read quickly but demand re-reads after certain revelations occur.
The basic plot is as follows: The Valley of Kings is a realm where magic is as real as anything else. Young Adrian Velba has spent the last year training to partake in a grand fighting tournament sponsored by the King and Queen. Already a long shot, Adrian's partner falls ill. Chances of success seem more than improbable; they seem impossible. Enter the mysterious Richard Aldana, a hunky brute who unexpectedly aligns himself with Adrian. Things get weird from there.

YOUR FIRST LOOK AT THE EPIC THIRD INSTALLMENT OF LASTMAN FROM SKYBOUND
LOS ANGELES 04/04/2023 — Today Skybound debuted a first look at Lastman Book Three, the newest release of the hit French fighting comic from the powerhouse team of Balak, Michaël Sanlaville, and Bastien Vivès. LastmanBook Three, containing volumes 5 + 6 of the original French series, will be available everywhere in July 2023.
Skybound’s editions of Lastman will collect the action-packed series as a complete set in English for the first time, featuring full color pages to open each volume that will be followed by striking black and white pages. Each of the six Lastman books will feature all-new remastered translations and backmatter including additional series art.
Until now, the Valley of Kings has been sheltered in relative peace. But when Richard Aldana creates a breach in the Rift, can Adrian and Marianne fix it before the Valley of the Kings erupts into absolute chaos?
Skybound’s complete series remastering of the critically acclaimed fight comic is in full swing with the recent releases of Lastman Book One, which contains volumes 1 + 2 of the original French series and a new foreword by Robert Kirkman, and Lastman Book Two, collecting volumes 3 + 4 of the original French series. Lastman Book Four, collecting volumes 7 + 8 of the original French series is due out in November 2023.
