We review Free Comic Book Day's 2025 selections and pick our Top Six.
Every comic lover's favorite holiday is this Saturday! Do you have your strategy in place? Are you going to your favorite local comic book store? Are you visiting a new one? Are you visiting a bunch? However you celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2025, make sure you do so loudly and proudly.
Maybe bring a friend? How about a young family member? Post your gets on social media, and if you tag us (@CBCCPodcast), we'll share them in our feed. Free Comic Book Day is all about spreading the joy of our beloved medium and supporting those who keep these books in our hands all year round.
We're lucky most publishers have already sent us their Free Comic Book Day 2025 selections. We spent the morning devouring them and picked a few favorites, some of which are absolutely essential if you're already reading their associated ongoing titles. Before we get to those, though, it's our duty to remind you that Free Comic Book Day is not just about nabbing free comic books.
The free stuff gets you, and maybe your curious friend or family member, in the door. Please purchase some comics once you've crossed the Local Comic Shop threshold. If you've been following our Support Your Local Comic Shop podcast series or talking to your shop owners and employees, you know 2025 is a critical year for stores. They need whatever financial support you can muster.
For us, Free Comic Book Day 2025 is the day to pick up our weekly subscription box and purchase that trade paperback or hardcover we've been eyeing for the last several months. If the store employees are not already too busy with customers, we may ask for a recommendation and just go ahead and blind-buy it. Our shop rarely steers us wrong.
Free Comic Book Day 2025 is a wonderful opportunity. Stoke your curiosity. Read beyond your usual interests. Take a chance, and you may uncover a new obsession.
Free Comic Book Day 2025: Energon Universe Special
Yeah, so if you're reading Skybound's current runs of G.I. Joe, Transformers, or Void Rivals, you must pick up this year's Energon Universe Special. Like last year's Skybound FCBD entry, some significant plot turns occur in this issue, and you will not want to miss them. Our Brad, the eighties cartoon kid maniac, let out a seriously piercing squeal at one point during Joshua Williamson and Andrea Milana's G.I. Joe chapter. Robert Kirkman and Conor Hughes (the new artist on Void Rivals) launch their next massive story arc in the Energon Universe Special, which will undoubtedly expand the Void Rivals mythology while bringing it closer to its two sibling series. Daniel Warren Johnson returns to art duties for his Transformers chapter, and that's enough to get you excited about this FCBD selection. It also beautifully gives space to one of our favorite Autobots. Prepare to fall further in love with Jazz.
Free Comics Book Day 2025: IDW Dark - Find Your Fear
Few genres are as reliable as the horror genre, and we're quite excited for the launch of IDW Dark. The publisher's new line will deliver fresh takes on popular licenses like 30 Days of Night while also delivering the highly anticipated sequel to last year's sensational Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, Rite of Spring. In addition to the two excellent glimpses at those stories, the IDW Dark: Find Your Fear sampler previews their Nightcaps comics, which are a series of one-shots platforming unique writers/artists like Sean Peacock (Blood Honey) and Gavin Fullerton (Tuatha).
Free Comic Book Day 2025: Best of 2000AD

Free Comic Book Day 2025: Speed Racer #0
Back in January, we screened the 2008 Speed Racer movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virginia. That film awoke something in us: an intense passion for Speed, Spritle, Chim-Chim, Pops, and Racer X. Where can we put this passion? Oh, the new Speed Racer series from Mad Cave Studios! Issue 0 contains two stories: one focused on Speed, written by David Pepose and illustrated by Davide Tinto, and another focused on Racer X, written by Mark Russell and illustrated by Chris Batista and Sabrina Cintron. Both are a blast and totally satisfy our newfound Speed Racer enthusiasm. They're light and joyous but packed with heart, action, and cheer.
Free Comic Book Day 2025: Godzilla - The New Heroes
Godzilla had one helluva 2024 at IDW last year: Tom Scioli's masterful Monsterpiece Theater, Andrew MacLean and Jake Smith's War for Humanity, and Louie Joyce's Skate or Die. These were not just some of the best Godzilla comics, but some of last year's best comics - FULL STOP. Now, with this Godzilla: The New Heroes sampler, it appears IDW will be pushing what's possible with the franchise. We see heroes traveling through space via Mechagodzilla, a BPRD-like global horror, and a rockin' G-Force team-up. Bring it on!
Free Comic Book Day 2025: All In 2025 Special Edition
Dan Slott loves Superman. We knew that already, having spoken with him after reading the Summer of Superman Special, which we thoroughly enjoyed, but damn...WE LOVED THIS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY COMIC! Slott gets Supes. His Superman is a bright beacon who can't be everywhere at once, but he tries to do so anyway. He loves people as much as Slott loves Superman. He'll save a cat from a tree, rescue folks from meeting an early oblivion, and cherish those moments not filled with peril. And Slott's Superman pairs majestically with Rafael Albuquerque's Superman. DC's All In 2025 Special Edition promises an exceptional series in the upcoming Superman Unlimited. We can't wait for that first issue to arrive in shops finally.
