Here’s a treat to kick off your week. Our pal Zack Quaintance sent us the first look at the Jesse Lonergan variant cover for his new anthology, Death of Comics Bookcase Volume Two. Lonergan should be a well-known celebrity for any Comic Book Couples Counseling listener - he illustrated our beautiful Lovebirds logo! Also, he happens to be one of the best artists working in the field today, having just won the Best Graphic Album at the Eisners for his astonishing work on Drome. Also, not for nothing, but we named Drome Best Original Graphic Novel during last year’s Stampies.
Not too long ago, Zack Quaintaince was on the podcast discussing his first Death of Comics Bookcase anthology. We considered how he made the leap from comics criticism to comic book creator, and why the desire to do so was impossible to ignore. Since then, he’s already made a second appearance on the show for his werewolf priest comic, Macabre Valley. His commitment to the medium is undeniable.
Death of Comics Bookcase Volume Two, like the first anthology, is crammed with wild ideas and creators born to match them. Joining Quaintance on the book are Nick Cagnetti (Archie, Spirit of the Shadows), John P. Golden (Adventure Time), Ryan Lee (Rick and Morty), and more. Not to forget Jesse Lonergan, who will be contributing the below variant cover alongside cartoonist and former Comic Book Couples Counseling guest, Fell Hound.

Brooklyn, NY (8/25/2026) — Comics Bookcase is excited to announce that Death of Comics Bookcase, Vol. 2 - Reign of the Comics Bookcases is now in pre-launch on Kickstarter, ahead of a full-campaign launch in mid-September. The new extra-long book is a sci-fi comics romp through six unique, fantastic worlds, from dead malls to San Diego Comic Con to post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.
The stories are all written by Zack Quaintance (an editor at Eisner-winning comics website, The Beat and a contributor to Publisher’s Weekly), and they’re brought to life by a who’s who of rising star artists, including Nick Cagnetti (Archie, Pink Lemondae), John P. Golden (Adventure Time), Ryan Lee (Rick and Morty), and more. Plus, the book has exclusive variant covers by Eisner-winner Jesse Lonergan (Drome) and breakout cartoonist Fell Hound (S.I.R.)!
"Death of Comics Bookcase, Vol. 2 is my wildest, hardest-hitting book yet,” Quaintance said. “The overarching story takes readers through six unique worlds, each of which is illustrated by one of my favorite artists in comics, and I think the end result is a fantastic 48-page standalone comic that will also launch some great new series for us moving forward!"
The Kickstarter campaign, which is slated to be fulfilled by November, features a number of exciting tiers for backers, including variant covers by Jesse Lonergan and Fell Hound, original art, rare issues of past Comics Bookcase publications, and a comics journalism 101 Zoom class taught by Quaintance.
In addition, this campaign will exclusively offer individual sketches from a number of the artists, perfect for art collectors. It will also offer a tier where readers can snag Nick Cagnetti’s super rare variant cover from the first campaign.
This marks the fourth Kickstarter comics project for Quaintance’s independent Comics Bookcase publishing imprint. Most recently, the imprint launched Macabre Valley #1, in 2025, a horror comic that featured artwork by Anna Readman, colors by Brad Simpson, and letters by Becca Carey. That campaign was a smash hit, raising $12,000 from more than 400 backers.
