We chat with the author about his latest book and why he can't help but get nerdy when writing X-Men.
Welcome to our Creator Corner, our new reoccurring interview series, where we chat with the coolest and most thought-provoking creators in the comics industry. In this entry, we're conversing with Neil Kleid about his new School of X novel, The Phoenix Chase. Listen to the unedited and unlocked audio on our PATREON PAGE.
Have y'all been paying attention to what's going on in the School of X line over at Simon & Schuster? These are X-stories told during the Marvel Now/Brian Michael Bendis era, the All-New X-Men era. It's a fascinating and compelling idea, rooting around in that particular Marvel Comics pocket.
Friend of the pod, Neil Kleid, is the latest author to contribute to their ongoing saga. His new book, The Phoenix Chase, explores Kid Omega's struggle to build his mutant school. When his students are kidnapped and dragged into space, Quentin Quire must partner with Alex "Havok" Summers to save them from certain doom. And safeguard the Phoenix Egg in the process. Some very strange, nefarious, and unexpected baddies pop up too.
Kleid plunges into multiple character dynamics left unexplored by the comics, adding exciting twists to relationships you may have yet to consider. We're stoked to have him back on the podcast, this time breaking down the complexities of working within the Marvel Now era. As a continuity geek, Kleid delights in seeding references throughout The Phoenix Chase. However, are his editors equally excited? We get into the push-and-pull of working within those All-New X-Men confines and how those restrictions can sometimes create delightful revelations.
